NASA is committed to continuously improving the safety of the Space
Shuttle Program’s crew and space vehicles. Glenn Research
Center is conducting extensive modeling, testing and analysis
in support NASA’s Shuttle safety efforts. They are involved
in assessing the safety of the Composite Overwrapped Pressure
Vessels and investigating the chemistry and oxidation of Reinforced
Carbon-Carbon (RCC). Also, subsystem engineers at Glenn monitor
the Shuttle’s Purge, Vent and Drain (PVD) and Stress, Loads
and Dynamics (SLD) subsystems before, during and after flight
to ensure crew and vehicle safety.
